Three (3) Assistant/Associate Professors in Marine and Maritime Studies (Tenure Track)


The three major areas included in this profiling area ‘The Sea' encompasses environmental and marine biology, public administration and governance, and industrial management. Two of the positions are located at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and one position is at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business, and Economics. The tenure track system at Åbo Akademi University offers an appointee to an assistant or associate professorship the opportunity to obtain a tenured position and advancement to a full professorship, i.e. the highest level of the tenure track system. The appointments are expected to begin during 2018.


The three appointed Assistant/Associate Professors will form the backbone of Åbo Akademi University's research profile in Marine and Maritime studies (‘The Sea'), which is the most recent strategic expansion based on a major grant from the Academy of Finland.


We are especially interested in candidates with interdisciplinary profiles. The appointed Assistant/Associate Professors will be expected to work together within the marine and maritime studies profiling area, and to explore possibilities for joint interdisciplinary research projects. Administratively, the appointees will be members of the two aforementioned faculties. They are, in combination with other measures, expected to position Åbo Akademi University as an internationally leading institution in interdisciplinary cutting-edge research in the area of marine and maritime studies. This research profiling area aims at shaping and developing current strengths within the fields of natural sciences and engineering, and economics and social sciences at Åbo Akademi University.


The appointed persons will each receive a starting grant of 40 000 euro to be used for the employment of a doctoral student or to otherwise support their research.


THE THREE POSITONS AND FIELDS OF ACTIVITIES


One Assistant/Associate Professor in Marine Ecology


The appointed Assistant/Associate Professor will be placed at Environmental and Marine Biology (Faculty of Science and Engineering). The appointed Assistant/Associate professor will contribute to the Centre of Excellence with cutting-edge research in the area of functional marine biodiversity and environmental ecology research, and explore possibilities for joint interdisciplinary research projects.


One Assistant/Associate Professor in Industrial Management


The appointed Assistant/Associate Professor will be placed at Industrial Management (Faculty of Science and Engineering). The appointed Assistant/Associate professor will contribute to the Centre of Excellence with cutting-edge research in the area of research on sustainable, large-scale infrastructure systems, particularly within seaborne transportation and energy (such as seamless end-to-end logistics including both tangible and intangible flows). Special focus is on shipping, seaborne logistics and ship-building as it is at the core of the Finnish industrial strategy.


One Assistant/Associate Professor in Public Administration/Political Science


The appointed Assistant/Associate Professor will be placed at Public Administration / Political Science (Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics). The appointed Assistant/Associate Professor will contribute to the Centre of Excellence with cutting-edge research in the area of governance of sea areas, in theory and in practice, including analysis over human - environment interaction on different societal and natural scales. Research background in public administration, political science, sustainability science, law and other social sciences are considered as a merit for the position, as well as interdisciplinary esearch experience. Special focus for this position is on the interplay between human activities and maritime nature.
