SMYD3 has been linked to tumorigenesis in several types of cancer; in particular it has been found upregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC). Despite being a histone H3K4-specific methyltransferase, various reports suggest that its oncogenic activity may involve functional interactions with non-histone proteins.
