Smart Tomographic Sensors for Advanced Industrial Process Control (TOMOCON)


Location: Lappeenranta, Finland
Contract: Full-time contract for 36 months (subject to the host institution probation where applicable)
Starting Date: March 1, 2018
Salary Gross salary per month: 3110 EUR x country coefficient 116,6 %
Mobility allowance per month: 600 EUR
Family allowance per month (if eligible): 500 EUR


Salary and both allowances are subject to direct taxation such as income tax (percentage varies) and compulsory employer and employee charges (2017 level 22,251 %). Salary per year after employer and employee charges (2017 level) for a researcher with family: 44 095 EUR. Income taxes will be deducted.

Within the TOMOCON network we offer the PhD position at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT).


Requirements
• Distinct university graduation in engineering or natural sciences, preferably in chemical engineering, technical physics or technical mathematics.
• Programming skills
• Experience in fluid dynamics, process control and/or sensor technology are assets
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary scientific work
• Good proficiency in English language


Eligibility
The candidate recruited in the TOMOCON project must be Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) and undertake transnational mobility (secondments, trainings, conferences). The candidate must be in the first four years from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate (e.g. master degree). It will be counted backward from the date of recruitment (in this case March 1, 2018). No doctoral degree has been awarded during these four years. The candidate can be of any nationality. The candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention1 are not taken into account.

TOMOCON project
The European Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network TOMOCON joins 12 international academic institutions and 15 industry partners. We work together in the emerging field of industrial process control using smart tomographic sensors. The network will lay the scientific and technological fundamentals of integrating imaging sensors into industrial processes and will demonstrate its functional feasibility on lab and pilot-scale applications. Our doctoral researchers will be trained and work in the fields of process tomography hardware, software and algorithms, control systems theory and design, industrial process design, multi-physics modelling and simulation, human-computer interaction, and massive parallel data processing. Controlled batch crystallization with ultrasound actuation
Reference number: TOMOCON-ESR8
Batch crystallization is widely used in purification of sugars, nutrients, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Tomographic measurement data throughout reactor volume offers ideal tools for robust control of crystal quality parameters. The PhD candidate will develop the tomographic measurement based on ultrasound or on EIT/ERT for analyzing antisolvent/precipitation crystallization data. The goal is to connect tomographic measurement of populations to process control system. Computational fluid dynamics including crystallization kinetics modeling can be used for comparison of measurement and model to verify tomographic sensor design. Mathematical modeling and numerical methods as well as some experimentation are used in every-day work. The target is also to make a demonstration according to the topic together with University of Technology Lodz (Poland), University of Bath (UK) and Technical University of Liberec (Czech). Índustry partner is Dupont (Finland). The PhD candidate will spend secondments of few months in total for technical and scientific training at Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (France), Technical University Lodz, University of Bath, and University of Liberec. The PhD degree will be awarded by Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland.
