Director, Stanford Cancer Institute
Stanford Medicine is initiating a search for the position of Director, Stanford Cancer Institute. The successful candidate will combine proven leadership skills honed at a major research institution with an established record of outstanding research in his/her discipline. The candidate should have MD, PhD, or MD/PhD degrees; some experience with a NCI-designated cancer center is desirable.
The Director reports to the Dean of the Stanford School of Medicine and will work closely with the leaders of both Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. S/he will have direct responsibility for maintaining and further evolving the highly collaborative programs in basic, clinical, and population-based research on which the center is based and for representing the SCI to the National Cancer Institute.
Faculty rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching. The major criteria for appointment in the Medical Center Line will be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.
Recognized as one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions, Stanford University is located in Silicon Valley, the heart of the Bay Area bioscience community. Stanford Medicine incorporates the School of Medicine as well as two internationally renowned hospitals: Stanford Health Care, and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. The SCI is a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center with world-renowned programs in cancer and cancer stem cell biology, radiation biology, imaging, immunology and immunotherapy, and translational research. It has over 400 members from across Stanford University who are responsible for more than $110M in annual cancer-relevant peer-reviewed funding. The clinical cancer programs extend from the Palo Alto campus to the South Bay and the East Bay and accounted for 23,000 new patient visits in 2016, representing all cancer disciplines.
Beyond the Cancer Institute, the new leader will have at her/his disposal the resources of an incomparable research university with a reputation of strong inter-disciplinary collaboration between its medical school, which is home to 19 clinical and 11 basic science departments including 7 Nobel laureates, and each of the other 6 schools, including its world leading departments of computer science, biomedical data science, bioengineering, and design. Eighteen independent centers and institutes link these schools, and serve as platforms for team science in environment, health and social policy. Plans are currently being explored for a dedicated cancer inpatient hospital and a cancer research building.
