The research aims to studying inequalities regarding tertiary educational opportunities, in relation to social inequalities and to educational policy. In Italy the opportunities of attainting the different levels of education still remain influenced by ascriptive characteristics, first of all the cultural and socio-economic background. The unequal effects of the social origins on schooling choices are particularly evident with regards to the higher levels of education. The research will focus on the study of the impact of the family background on the choices for continuing education at the university level. For this purpose, the research will employ both quantitative analysis and qualitative in-depth analysis regarding specific factors and/or territories. The main objective is to verify to which extent educational policies in some regions of Italy, during the last years, have contributed to weak the relationship between social inequalities and tertiary education.
