The Communications Director manages the development and implementation of communications strategies and programs in support of the companion animal and the food production business units for the pharmaceutical and vaccine products that advance animal health.

- Works with business unit leaders, veterinarians and other scientific leaders to develop and execute communications strategies and that prioritize and advance key business objectives across the region

- Proactively enhance visibility and reputation of Merck Animal Health – bringing companion animal, food animal and vet/food affairs platform programs together to enhance larger company reputation

- Manage day-to-day decisions guiding communications and provide PR counsel, as needed

- Ensures adherence to standard global communications practices for media relations, employee communications, reputation management, compliance and issues management

- Drives internal communications and employee engagement.

- Identifies media issues and opportunities and prepares organization. Interview preparation of individuals whether undertaken internally or with third-party support.

- Serves as a liaison to third party groups and to external experts and as Company spokesperson to trade, local and digital news media.

- Works directly with multiple PR agencies and manages related product budgets to implement comprehensive communications plans for all business units and supporting divisions – with thoughtful long term approach.

- Merck Animal Health representative on Animal Health industry association communication councils.

- Identifies issues/potential issues, develops strategies and tactics to address/mitigate, work collaboratively with all impacted constituents, monitor and report on activity/impact/deliverables. Engages agency support as needed.

- Review and edit a broad array of communication/promotional/marketing materials to ensure consistent messaging and provide the “PR” lens to identify potential misperceptions, issues, etc.

- Manages end-to-end communications.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- Bachelor's degree. Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field preferred

Required Experience and Skills:

- Minimum of ten years of related communications experience

- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage external issues in the media

- Effectively communicates across multiple languages and cultures

- Demonstrates good understanding of the business and regulatory environment in which Merck Animal Health competes and communicates

- Exhibits initiative, strategic thinking and creative problem solving in response to the communications challenges and opportunities faced by the company.

- Effectively coaches, counsels and builds teams and people

- Manages multiple projects and meets fast deadlines

- Experience with multimedia and digital formats

- Highly motivated and able to manage projects without supervision

- Team player, collaborative spirit, ability to succeed in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment

- Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communications skills

- Corporate communications experience in agriculture or animal science is beneficial

- 15-20% travel required to company locations and customer/company meetings.
