Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Veterinarian to not only support the animal care and use program here at Lilly but to also work closely with our scientists to develop innovative research models for Lilly in support of discovering medicines that change lives. The primary role of the Research Veterinarian is to support our animal care and use program by working with the Attending Veterinarian to manage a robust animal welfare program. The role requires:
  • comparative medicine knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, epidemiology, clinical medicine, preventative medicine, diagnostics, genetics, animal behavior, and surgical and anesthetic techniques.
  • management of relationships with internal investigators, their staff, the IACUC, and Veterinary Resources to ensure the program is within regulatory requirements required for the use of animals for research.
  • compliance with regulations and expectations regarding clinical and surgical standards for animals utilized in research, this role provides veterinary care and surgical and anesthesia support for all personnel and animals our corporate center.
  • understanding of all local, state, federal, and internal policies regulating the use of animals.

Key Objectives:
Veterinary Medical Care: 50%
  • Oversee the veterinary care program including ensuring humane care and handling for all animals used in research
  • Examining, diagnosing, and treating diseases that develop including health care record management
  • Monitoring of surgical outcomes for complications and reporting of adverse results
  • Oversee disease surveillance and preventative medicine programs including monitoring disease incidence and overseeing eradication efforts.
  • Oversight for dietary management and enrichment programs.
    • Management of weekend/holiday/after-hours coverage
    • Supervision of direct reports, registered Veterinary Technicians
Regulatory Compliance: 10%
  • Participation in USDA/AAALAC inspection preparation and site visits.
  • Member of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee including protocol review, inspections, policy development and post approval protocol monitoring
  • Participation in development of veterinary guidelines for humane animal use.
  • Support the Attending Veterinarian, IACUC Chair, and Compliance Office with the animal welfare program.
Research Support: 40%
  • Assist with new animal model development
  • Advising investigators on animal biology, animal procedures, and animal models.
  • Attending study design and post-study meetings.
  • Development of new animal models and oversight of special procedures.
  • Perform literature search for alternatives.
  • Assistance in development and writing of Animal Care and Use Protocols.
Basic Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association
  • Board Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
  • Indiana Veterinary license or another state Veterinary license and able to complete Indiana State Licensure within 6 months
  • At least 5 years of research lab animal medicine experience
Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Knowledge and skills in laboratory animal medicine
  • Knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (Guide), and the Animal Welfare Act (AWA)
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills and leading across various functional groups
  • Demonstrates success in effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated and willingness to work in complex diverse environment
  • Strong verbal and effective written communication skills
  • Understanding of scientific design and methods
  • Active participation in AALAS and/or LAWTE preferred
