Analysis of food habits of wild boar through DNA metabarcoding.
The wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano ed Alburni National Park, as in most of the Italian peninsula, is undergoing a strong demographic growth, with heavy repercussions both on agro-ecosystems and wild systems. To take on this emergence and identify suitable management solutions, it need to have a clear understanding of the species characteristics. Specifically, in order to define its ecological position, we intend to study the diet of this ungulate through a non-invasive approach of DNA metabarcoding starting from faeces. In fact, knowing the food habits of a species can provide an important indication on its favorite environments and address the management efforts on these latter specifically.
