Dynamics and control for asteroid exploration and orbit manipulation missions
The dynamics of asteroids I proximity of the Earth will be studied in view of missions for their orbital manipulation. We will calculate the achievable asteroid deflection, considering orbital uncertainties, the dynamic response of the asteroid to a kinetic impact and any mission failures. We will study the effects of resonances on the evolution of close encounters with Earth to maximise the deflection of the incoming object. ESA's planetary analysis software will be extended to study asteroid manipulation missions. As part of asteroid and comet exploration missions for scientific studies and their potential exploitation, we will design frozen orbits and transfers with an irregular gravity field and study the evolution of debris fragments from them.
