Medical radiation physics is a subject that includes research and teaching in ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and its use in medical applications. The major areas are radiation therapy, x-ray diagnostics, nuclear medicine including both diagnostics and therapy, as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In all of these areas, work include dosimetry- and health aspects. The research activities are highly clinical and often in close cooperation with medical physicists, employed by Region Skåne. An important part of the department's activities is the medical physics education, which is a 5-year regulated vocational education leading to certification. In order to maintain a high quality in this education, synergy between research and education is of the utmost importance, and all our teachers are engaged in this education. In addition to teaching in the field of medical physics, the Department has established courses in the LTH "Biomedical Engineering program" as well as courses on radiation-related training of x-ray nurses. The Department of Medical Radiation Physics belongs to both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine.

Type of employment

Limit of tenure, 4 years, with the opportunity to promotion to senior lecturer.

Job description

The work tasks mainly include research and development in clinical radiation therapy with a focus on adaptive treatment, especially 3D methods for dosimetric measurements, calculations and simulations under the influence of different types of physiological and machine-related motion. This is an expanding area as it is important to ensure the correct absorbed dose to the target area of the treatment while minimizing unnecessary irradiation of healthy tissue.

The work tasks will also include teaching in different areas (not only radiation therapy physics) in the medical physics program, as well as for postgraduate studies. Development of existing courses may also be included. Supervision of doctoral students and master degree programs will be an important part. However, the successful candidate is expected to work with research at least 80% full-time. The content of the work assignments, as well as the distribution between research and teaching, can change over time.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to build up own active research activities in the subject area and adjoining topics, which also involves an active effort to seek external funding of the department's activities, and to develop cooperation with units within the university as well as other government agencies and organizations working with similar issues.

Eligibility

A person who holds a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise shall be qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than 7 years before the last date for applications. Specific to this position is a doctorate in medical radiation physics.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of Assessment

The main assessment criteria are scientific and educational skills, with an emphasis on scientific skills. The associate senior lecturer must have a doctorate in the field of radiation therapy. In addition to scientific skills, obtained through documented post-doctoral research activity of at least 2 years, clinical activities and experience in the field are highly valued. An important criterion is how the applicant through his/her experience and competence can supplement and strengthen research and education in radiation therapy at the Department of Medical Radiation Physics.

Applicants are expected to have great interest in teaching and pedagogics. Documented good collaborative skills are also an important criterion for assessment, together with proven ability to independently plan, develop and implement education at both undergraduate and advanced levels.

Very good knowledge of English with good communication skills is a requirement.

As the teaching language in the medical physics program has to be Swedish, by regulation, it is a requirement that any non-Swedish speaking appointee will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish within two to three years.

Major importance will be given to an independent research plan which, among other things, shows how the applicant's research complements the research at the department, and with which research environments the applicant expects to develop collaborations.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

Promotion

An associate senior lecturer is to be promoted, on application, to employment as a senior lecturer on an indefinite-term contract if he or she has the qualifications required for the post and is assessed to be suitable in accordance with the qualification requirements and assessment criteria established by the Faculty of Science. An associate senior lecturer may only apply for promotion once.

Qualification requirements and assessment criteria for promotion to a permanent position as senior lecturer:

Well documented research expertise is important for the discipline. The following criteria will be applied:           - High national and international standing as a researcher

           - High-quality publications in international research journals.

           - Independent research profile.

           - Qualifications corresponding to those of a reader.

           - Participation in scholarly conferences or workshops.

           - Research funding from national or international funding bodies.

Well documented teaching expertise. The following criteria will be applied:           - Good subject knowledge and documented experience of teaching at different levels of higher education.

           - Documented ability to develop and renew courses and teaching methods.

           - Documented ability to lead and organise education.

           - Documented ability to supervise Master´s and PhD students.

           - Five weeks´training in teaching and learning in higher education or the equivalent.

An ability to interact with wider society and provide public information on current research and development.

An ability to work as a leader in higher education, including leading research projects and participating in decision-making bodies at university, faculty or department level. An application for promotion to a permanent position as senior lecturer is to be submitted to the faculty at the latest 6 months before the appointment as associate senior lecturer ends. The application for promotion is to be judged by the teacher's appointment board after acquisition of the opinion of at least two experts on the subject.
