European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques. User operation will start in September 2017.


For our radiation protection and laser safety team within our Safety & Radiation Protection group we are looking for a


Radiation Protection & Laser Safety Officer (f/m)

The Position


  • act as radiation protection and laser safety officer according to German radiation protection regulation and the laser safety regulation

  • monitor compliance with legal requirements in occupational safety and health

  • follow-up safety risk assessments including shielding concepts, mechanical designs, risk assessments under radiation protection and laser safety regulation in close collaboration with the scientific and technical groups at European XFEL

  • management of radioactive sources and materials as well as dosimetry (local and personnel dosimetry)

  • implement, coordinate, and carry out radiation protection and laser safety trainings, monitor tours, and appointment of necessary safety measures

  • expert consultation and training of scientific staff, scientific guests, safety representatives, maintenance staff, personnel in emergency management

  • collaborate with the company doctor and management of occupational health related medical examinations of persons according to the radiation protection regulation and laser safety regulation

  • review user program and in-house research proposals for experiments, beam time, and laboratory access, with regards to radiation protection and laser safety

  • preparation and follow-up of safety concepts and regulations as well as instructions for radiation protection and laser safety according to German legislation

  • close collaboration within the team, with other Safety and Radiation Protection Group members and with the DESY radiation protection group

  • strong liaison and exchange with scientific groups working at the experimental stations and in the photon tunnels

Requirements


  • completed university degree in physics or engineering

  • at least 2 years of documented work experience in the field of radiation protection

  • knowledge of German radiation protection and laser safety regulation

  • excellent communication skills and sophisticated English and German language proficiency

  • high level of sense of responsibility, assertiveness and motivation

The following experiences/skills are desirable assets:


  • certified as radiation protection officer by the German authorities (Fachkunde)

  • work experience with accelerator, synchrotron radiation or high power laser facilities

  • work experience in occupational safety, as safety representative or safety officer

  • international work experience in science or research laboratory

  • experience in working with authorities and certified body

Duration: This appointment is initially limited to two years and may - subject to a later decision - become permanent.


Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany. In addition European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme as well as broad relocation benefits. The European XFEL GmbH intends to achieve a widely international staff. Non-German candidates hired from abroad receive an international allowance.
