4PHOTON (Novel Quantum Emitters monolithically grown on Si, Ge and III-V substrates) is a Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) which offers positions for PhD students in the field of Quantum Technologies (QT). 4PHOTON is aimed at providing training at the forefront of this expanding and disruptive field. The researcher profile required by QT is extremely multi-specialized, being required to tackle problems in fundamental quantum physics, optics, photonics and device fabrication (growth and processing).

The ESRs will perform experiments in the state-of-the-art laboratories on Quantum Optoelectronics using novel materials and devices, in strong collaboration with the ITN network partners in academia and industry. The ESR will become part of well-equipped and highly motivated teams to work on the exploration of the optical and electronic properties and device applications of quantum dot based photonics.

This project will suit students with interest in solid-state physics, quantum mechanics, optics and semi-conductor devices. Working together with others in a team and in the network is very important for this project. The 4PHOTON PhD students will be part of a structured framework where they can obtain a solid knowledge of the full range of skills employed in the development of quantum photonic devices and circuits, from basic science to applications, thus being able to deliver important contributions to the field of QT by observing and understanding all aspects and their relationships of this important emerging field. In addition to research activities, this will be underpinned by dedicated research schools and seminars by experts in the field of quantum information processing and its different aspects, from materials over devices to systems.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme offers highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. Exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment. In particular it consists of:

  • a living allowance (= 3110 euro/month [the Marie Skłodowska-Curie rules apply a correction factor to this amount to allow for the cost of living in different countries: 106.7% to Italy, 111.0% to France, 98.%8 to Germany, 104.3% to Netherlands, 120.3% to United Kingdom, 113.1% to Switzerland])

  • a monthly mobility and family allowance (= 600 and 500 euro/month depending on the family situation).

It must be noted that the living allowance is a gross EU contribution to the salary costs of the researcher. Consequently, the net salary results from deducting all compulsory (employer/employee) social security contributions as well as direct taxes (e.g. income tax) from the gross amounts. The rate indicated here is for researchers devoting themselves to their project on a full-time basis. The mobility and family allowance is a fixed amount, regardless of the country of recruitment, and may be taxable depending on the country in question. Who can apply

Applicants need to fully comply with the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), which are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate.

  • Applicants cannot already hold a PhD.

  • Applicants can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake physical, transnational mobility: they must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the reference recruitment date. In the case of researchers with refugee status, they will benefit from a less restrictive mobility rule;

  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and spoken English.

Applicants for 4PHOTON have to meet the following main criteria:

  • Excellent Master's degree or equivalent qualification

  • Convincing/proven interest and motivation in development of Quantum Technology

  • Excellent references

  • Publications in a relevant research field are desirable
