Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations world-wide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK) and Rome (Italy).

The appointed Group Leader will be an ambitious structural or structural-cell biologist with an original research programme on structure-function relationships of macromolecular complexes in eukaryotic systems. He/she will benefit from the world-class environment offered by the inter-institutional Partnership for Structural Biology (EMBL, ESRF, ILL, IBS, http://www.psb-grenoble.fr) which provides access to state-of-the-art instrumentation including the recently upgraded ESRF synchrotron X-ray beamlines for MX and SAXS, cryo-EM (Polara/K2, Titan Krios/K2), high-field NMR (600-950 MHz spectrometers), the ILL neutron scattering beamlines and a biophysics platform. He/she will also have direct access to in-house bacterial, insect and mammalian cell expression facilities, confocal microscopy and high-throughput crystallization platforms for soluble and membrane proteins. We are particularly interested in candidates who will make use of local opportunities in advanced X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM and/or are interested in structural-cell biology e.g. cryo-electron tomography, super-resolution microscopy and correlative light and electron microscopy. Existing groups at EMBL Grenoble focus their research on protein-nucleic acid complexes involved in transcription, epigenetics, RNA metabolism, RNA virus replication and host-pathogen interactions.

Applicants should have a PhD, at least 3 years post-doctoral experience and a strong record of achievement in structural, molecular or cell biology.

EMBL offers a highly collaborative and uniquely international culture. It fosters top quality, interdisciplinary research by promoting a vibrant environment consisting of young independent research groups with access to outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Significant core funding and limited teaching responsibilities allow EMBL group leaders to undertake ambitious, farsighted research programs and provides a scientific environment that is particularly attractive for researchers with families.

Further information about research at EMBL Grenoble can be found on the EMBL web page.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organization with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. EMBL is committed to achieving gender balance and strongly encourages applications from women. Appointment will be based on merit alone. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family.
