Cambridge - UK
Salary to be negotiated
The Medical Research Council (MRC) is inviting applications for the role of Institute Director for the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB).
An internationally leading research institute, the LMB excels in many areas of fundamental molecular research, and works to translate world-class discoveries into improvements in health care. Over the last 50 years, 14 of its scientists have been awarded a Nobel Prize and researchers have developed ground-breaking technologies such as x-ray crystallography of proteins, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies. A flagship MRC institute, LMB has a budget of some £190 million over five years. LMB is housed in a new iconic building with state-of-the-art facilities, and is immediately adjacent to an expanding biomedical campus in Cambridge including the new headquarters for Astra Zeneca.
The current Director of the LMB, Professor Sir Hugh Pelham, will stand down in 2018 and the MRC is seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist and dynamic, visionary leader to succeed Sir Hugh. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional basic scientist, with an international reputation and an excellent track record in an area of cellular and molecular biology relevant to the Institute’s mission. The candidate will need to show an exciting vision for the future of the LMB, excellent leadership and strategic skills, and the ability to forge new partnerships nationally and internationally. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead an exceptional MRC institute, and work alongside world-leading scientists in delivering transformational research. Additionally, the new Director will be expected to lead their own internationally competitive programme of research.
This is a senior appointment and a competitive salary will be offered and will be negotiable depending on experience. The successful applicant will be employed by the MRC with relevant terms and conditions.
