Position Summary:


The Advising Specialist position is designed to provide excellent academic advising services to approximately 250 first year, second year, incoming transfer, and exploratory students. The Advising Specialists will have content expertise in one or more college(s)/program(s) and will assist students in making timely progress toward degree completion.


This position is expected to work closely with staff in Career Services, Academic Support Programs, the Counseling and Testing Center, the Campus Visits Office, Undergraduate Admission Office, the Office of the Registrar, and other student support units to ensure students are able to access all opportunities for support and enrichment.


This individual will develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with other personnel, faculty, and advisors, and will communicate clearly and effectively on academic advising, student support needs, and recruitment and retention initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications:



Bachelors degree


Compiling and analyzing information

Identifying and defining problems/alternatives and developing recommendations

Presenting information clearly and concisely

Delivering student-centered customer service

Good knowledge of: the structure and chain of responsibilities within a university

Ability to:

Operate independently, exercising independent judgment and discretion with little or no guidance, display strong organizational skills

Display strong work ethic

Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally

Work cooperatively as part of a team with a variety of people

Serve as liaison with other departments/institutions

Explain complex information


Preferred Qualifications:



Degree or professional experience in STEM field

Master’s Degree

Experience: providing academic advisement in a higher education setting, working with diverse students and colleagues, balancing competing priorities

Knowledge of:

University of Idaho academic rules and regulations for undergraduate level advising

BANNER student module

Microsoft Excel

Hobson’s Starfish


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:


Ability to lift or otherwise move up to 30 pounds. Willingness to travel and to work selected evenings and weekends.
