At Merck Manufacturing facility in Elkton, Virginia, we currently have an Associate Director of Merck Production Systems position available. The Elkton Plant is located in the Shenandoah Valley along the Shenandoah River and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The facility is just a short distance from major state universities: University of Virginia and James Madison University. 

The Associate Director of Merck Production Systems reports to the Director of Supply Chain Management. 

The role will initially focus on the following responsibilities:

- Coach, teach & partner with Integrated Process Team Leads and Centers of Excellence to develop and maintain a sustainable lean manufacturing environment driven by an engaged workforce, develop plans and execute people performance improvement activities that directly contribute to the business

- Prioritize, align and integrate use of various tools & techniques to analyze and standardize management techniques across value stream and effectively transfer required mindsets, behaviors and skills into the organization (Standard work, Contractual adherence, Coaching and feedback, consequence management, Change Management, Rhythms and Patterns)

- Partner with the production teams on the shop floor to identify sources & eliminate issues due to management execution and employee interactions and develop trust through standardized communication tools

- Lead the Site MPS resources assigned to the Integrated Process Teams and the Centralized Merck Production Systems Resources

- Coordinate area governance processes for the above tasks (metrics, portfolio, tier)

- Incorporate management skills into the visual management systems resulting in sustainability & realization of intended people and business benefit

- Conduct impact & needs assessments

- Stay abreast of new and changing technology, procedures, and management practices to maintain a highly skilled workforce.



- Bachelor’s degree


- A minimum of ten years of experience in any combination of the following areas:  Project Management, Manufacturing/Production Operations, Human Resources, LSS, and Direct Coaching/Supervising employees.

- Experience guiding the decision making and interacting with all levels of the business

- Solid business acumen, proven team building skills, exceptionally good listening skills, results oriented

- Experience applying lean / six sigma tools and guiding & facilitating large teams in a manufacturing environment

- Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply methods and tools

- Experience enabling and leveraging diverse perspectives, talents, etc. to achieve business outcomes

- Demonstrated experience practically applying methodology to accelerate & improve business results (lean, change management, inclusion, experiential learning, adult learning).

- Excellent skills using IT applications to organize and analyze data (ex. MS-Access, MS-Excel, Minitab).


- Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment that is regulated by a governmental agency

- Experience negotiating & implementing Bargaining Unit agreements
