Merck Production Systems (MPS) is an integrated production system for how we design, manage, and continuously improve our operations and supporting business processes, enabled through the development of our people. The MMD (Merck Manufacturing Division) MPS Team is responsible for driving MPS throughout the organization to enable change in the operating systems, management systems, and mindsets, behaviors and capabilities of our people to produce product at the highest quality, for the lowest cost, and in the shortest lead time.

Under the direction of the MPS Director, the Associate Director of Business Consulting will work with leaders across the organization to drive business performance and develop people. Approximately [50]% of the time will be spent on the floor providing direct, hands on support of improvement activities, including coaching and developing leaders and building critical capabilities. In addition, this position will be unique in that it will also provide up to [50%] support of training and development of MPS competencies including the development and maintenance of core curriculum, facilitation of training and supporting the execution of the broader MPS Development strategy. Due to the nature of the work and diversity of sites, expected travel will be [50-75]%.

MMD MPS Associate Director Description of

- Partner with and consult functional leaders, plant managers and their leadership teams to develop plans and execute performance improvement activities.

- Influence and link improvement objectives to the highest division priorities

- Develop Lean management and people development processes and plans

- Manage end-to-end processes and projects to drive results and realize intended business benefit

- Design/maintain business consulting processes to capture business needs and required capabilities; align processes to existing organization models, as necessary

- Monitor and leverage performance results and recommend development improvement opportunities, as appropriate

- Align development strategies around identified needs and gaps. Coach business managers around "best fit" strategies while collaborating with the MMD L&D teams to leverage existing and/or develop learning solutions to meet unique business requirements

- Plan and promote the understanding, application, and improvement of MPS development strategies and solutions to address talent gaps and needs

- Collaborate with other MPS Leaders to optimize solutions to support performance improvement within the business unit while aligning with the over-arching strategic goals driven by the divisional / functional MPS leader

- Utilize various Lean tools and techniques in conjunction with the House of MPS to diagnose, analyze and improve business processes

- Provide teaching and coaching to effectively transfer Lean skills into the organization for the development of Lean Leaders

MMD MPS Associate Director Responsibilities & Capabilities:

Provide guidance for Merck’s structure and operations and identify key business opportunities through utilizing financial data and industry knowledge and trends.

Proactively recognize and mitigate barriers to cross-functional initiatives and can act as an intermediary across divisional, geographical, and cultural boundaries.

Promote a culture of continuous improvement and challenging the status quo, while driving departmental/regional strategies that align with Merck’s long-term strategy.

Plan and implement learning processes to support business performance in alignment with strategy

Coach and develop people at all levels, stretching mindset, skill and behavior to advance competencies within the framework of MMD’s lean enterprise

Manage teams to mitigate risk, allocate resources, and drive on time completion of initiatives.

Mentor others on effective communication and active listening techniques to fuller understand client/customer needs and expectations.

Lead value deep process analysis through value stream mapping to measure stagnation of inventory and information and can lead kaizen to increase capacity and improve process performance.

Develop visual controls and framework to make problems visible and responds with urgency to effectively break down complex problems, lead root cause analysis, and develop effective countermeasures.

Lead and coach kaizen with a team to achieve multiple target conditions to achieve an overall challenge.

Lead kaizen to improve standardized work.

Can design balanced work to takt time, with smooth flow and leads kaizen to reduce lead-time, inventory, and change-over time.

Apply Systematic Problem Solving (8-Step) methodology to solve complex problems with multiple independent variables.

Able to engage sponsors and clients, lead major changes, and effectively coach senior leaders and E2E/IP Managers.

Build trust and develop new relationships with internal and external clients to effectively collaborate and achieve successful outcomes at a regional/global.



Bachelor’s Degree in related field including Engineering, Supply Chain, Business

Master’s Degree preferred


- Minimum of 8 years of related experience leading advanced lean deployments in highly complex environments with a minimum 3 years of supporting the development and delivery of lean training.

- Lean Leader Level 3

- Experience analyzing complex end-to-end supply chains and driving process improvement

- Hands-on application of Lean tools and techniques such as: Training Within Industry (TWI), standardized work, systematic problem solving, value stream mapping, mistake proofing, SMED, 5S-Visual Factory, etc.

- Experience applying consultative skills: ability to influence decision making, ability to interact with all levels of the business (senior leaders to shop floor working teams), project management skills (demonstrated experience in managing large teams), solid business acumen, proven team building skills, exceptionally good listening skills, results oriented, strong analytical skills, and prior process improvement experience.

- Coaching, teaching, and driving a High Performance Organization. Proven experience in coaching and teaching others to think, behave and apply lean methods and tools. Experience enabling and leveraging diverse perspectives, talents, etc. to achieve business outcomes.


Extensive Lean application experience, deep understanding and successful application of TPS.

Excellent skills using IT applications to organize and analyze date (MS-Access, MS-Excel, Minitab).

Experience in adult learning, organizational learning, and developing people within a TPS context

Experience in operations management, manufacturing, or related disciplines.

Experience in a Vaccines or Sterile pharmaceutical environment.

Secondary degree in supply chain or business administration
