Two (2) Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) - MSCA-ITN Project "5G STEP FWD"
The Research Committee (Special Account for Research Funds) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the framework of the project Innovative Training Network (ITN) "5G STEP FWD - 5G System Technological Enhancements Provided by Fiber Wireless Deployments". The project is funded under EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation - HORIZON 2020, MarieSkłodowska-Curie, with Academic Head, Associate Prof. Amalia N. Miliou, invites candidates to submit applications for two (2) positions (through the award of a work contract), for 36 months each with a total anticipated remuneration 286.773,84 euro (VAT and taxes included).
The project will work towards a new high capacity and low latency architectures for backhauling 5G networks. The proposed architectures take full advantage of the ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of the UDWDM technology as well as the Long-Reach PONs technology, in order to provide connectivity to a dense small-cell population. The project researchers will work both at the physical and the network layer domains, aiming at designing systems and algorithms for building the 5G cellular network of tomorrow. Researcher A: An Early Stage Researcher- ESR/ duration 36 months/ up to 143.386,92€
Network architecture design for service provision in urban areas with existing fiber infrastructure. More specifically:
i) to design and test a coherent receiver for UDWDM applications that achieves higher sensitivity and lower BER values compared to SoA receivers, and
ii) to optimally upgrade existing PON infrastructures and metro network to support UDWDM.
i) new design of coherent receiver with ultra-high sensitivity, and
ii) novel UDWDM PON design based on the upgrade of existing PON infrastructure, with minimal new-fiber installation and optimal combination of AWGs, splitters & amplifiers.
Researcher B: An Early Stage Researcher- ESR/ duration 36 months/ up to 143.386,92€
Network architecture design for service provision in urban based on new fiber infrastructure. More specifically:
i) to investigate the applicability of LR-PONs as a fiber-based backhaul infrastructure and
ii) to quantify the cost-efficiency of the deployment of LR-PONs compared to UDWDM PONs by developing new mathematical frameworks for the performance evaluation of the two network configurations.
i) acquiring new knowledge on the performance limits & potentials of LR-PONs as the backhaul of mmWave networks, and
ii) analytical framework development for the optimal selection of the two optical backhaul configurations
The recruited ESRs will collaborate with the members of the research team of Photonic Systems and Networks under the supervision of the scientific responsible researcher and the technical guidance of an experienced scientific associate, member of the research team.
