Centrifugal Europe: Policy Challenges and Institutional Implications for the EU Governance
The research project will investigate the policy and institutional consequences of centrifugal processes in operation in Europe in the 2000s. Brexit, the euro crisis, the migration crisis, the terrorist attacks have dramatically called into question the viability of the integration project and the integrity of the EU. Disintegration, not integration, has become the main challenge for the EU. The research project will analyze the policies pursued for dealing for those crises and their implications on the structure of the EU governance. Because internal differentiation has become the main property of EU governance, the research project will finally discuss whether such differentiation is or not compatible with democratic legitimacy.
