Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the first national universities to establish the Biomedical Engineering (BME) program in China. Since its founding, the BME program at SJTU has been consistently ranked at the top of its peers in China both in research and education. In the past decade, the University has continuously invested in BME with major initiatives in infrastructure and faculty recruitment. BME is one of the only few programs that recently received major funding from Shanghai Educational Commission for enhancing its research and training.

BME at SJTU currently has more than 80 primary faculty appointments, including 19 full professors and 39 associate professors. Our faculty has received numerous accolades and honors, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering, awardees of One-Thousand Talent Programs and National Outstanding Young Investigatorships, as well as the esteemed Chang Jiang Distinguished Professorships. Many of our faculty members have been honored by major professional societies as elected fellows, such as AAAS, ASME, AIMBE, and SPIE, and also hold editorships or editorial board members of major peer reviewed journals, including Nanomedicine, Stroke, Journal of Cytometry Part A, and several IEEE Transactions. There are 187 undergraduate students and 191 graduate students registered in the BME program. Our research programs are well funded both from National Funding Agencies, including the highly competitive and prestigious 973 Program and industrial partners with an annual amount exceeding 70 million RMB. BME program has also established broad interdisciplinary research centers with 13 affiliated clinical centers, such as the nationally top ranked Ruijin Hospital, through its Med-X Institute located on the Xuhui Campus in downtown Shanghai.

To further support the research and development effort in the broadly defined BME, both the university and the School of BME have recently decide to enhance its Postdoctoral Fellows Program that provides competitive stipends and comprehensive technical support. Postdoctoral fellows can choose to work with any qualified mentors in the following sub-disciplines: Biomedical Instrumentation, Neuroscience and Engineering, Medical Imaging and Informatics, Nano-Biomaterials, Systems Biology and Medicine, and Biological Sciences and Diseases.
