The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is seeking Materials Scientists with expertise and leadership in nanoscience. Areas of specific interest include quantum materials, in-situ transmission electron microscopy, and soft-bio materials fabrication. This position is a critical role in the CINT user program, which is jointly operated by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct world-leading original research and support user projects in the areas of nanoscience integration
  • Lead a growing collaborative experimental or theoretical research program in basic and user-inspired research that exploits current and future CINT capabilities and strategic directions
  • Conduct research that will garner National/International peer recognition, lead to highly cited publications in major journals, create new intellectual property, and have impact in important science and technology programs to solve critical challenges in energy and National security
  • Work with the growing community of CINT users who seek your expertise to advance their own research and lead to impactful publications
  • Engage in stimulating collaborations, develop new research programs that leverage expertise at Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, and lead in the development of new nanoscience integration capabilities
  • Lead a small team of technicians and postdocs, to include development of team members through training, guidance towards substantial research contributions, and scientific publications


  • PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • On-going scientific research and creative leadership in micro/nano-devices, or related fields
  • Experience working in research teams on complex multicomponent projects
  • Experience working in a related nanoscience area
  • Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences
  • Experience fostering scientific collaborations with a diverse population of visiting researchers including students, post-doctoral scientists, and research peers from academic, industrial and other research institutions
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance


  • Experience with the modeling, fabrication or characterization of nano-scale materials and devices
  • National reputation as evidenced by multiple concurrent, interdisciplinary collaborations and involvement in scientific-society activities
  • Record of publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with program development and grants preparation with intra- and extramural funding agencies

Department Description:

The Nanostructure Physics department (01881) conducts original research to establish the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials into microscale and macroscale systems and devices. Department members perform discovery and use-inspired basic research in support of the DOE/SC Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and other Sandia programs. CINT is a DOE/Office of Science National User Facility operated jointly by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories with facilities at both Laboratories.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
