The Medical Faculty Mannheim of the University of Heidelberg is seeking qualified applicants for the position of:

Professor for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (W3)

The professorship is located at the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim (Foundation under Public Law, Director: Prof. Dr. Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg, Commercial Director: Katrin Erk).

The Central Institute of Mental Health (CIMH) is a research institute of international standing in psychiatry and the neurosciences. In addition to representing the fields of psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine within the Medical Faculty Mannheim of the University of Heidelberg, the CIMH also provides highly specialized university medical care in psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine. At present, the CIMH has a total of 349 inpatient and day-care beds distributed across four departments: the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (including the unit for Gerontopsychiatry), the Department of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine, the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, and the Department of Addictive Behavior and Addiction Medicine. As part of an ongoing multi-annual building project the CIMH will see a gradual increase in beds up to a total of around 390. This increase allows the establishment of new treatment programs as well as new inpatient and outpatient health care concepts. In combination with the newly established Center for Innovative Research in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy we will achieve a significant expansion of our treatment-relevant research structures.

The professorship for “Psychiatry and Psychotherapy” is located in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (Medical Director Prof. Dr. Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg). The successful candidate will be required to represent the field of “Biological Psychiatry and Psychotherapy” in all aspects related to research and teaching and will be integrated in the ongoing research activities of the CIMH and the Medical Faculty Mannheim. We are looking for applicants with a strong systems neurobiological focus with relevance to pathophysiology, therapy and prevention of mental disorders. Candidates with appropriate qualifications can also be involved in patient care.

In order to fulfill the numerous functions of this professorship, candidates must have the following qualifications:

University degree in an area relevant to the research field (medical science or psychology)

  • For physicians board certification in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
  • Doctoral degree and (in accordance with Article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg) habilitation, successfully evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualifications.
  • Research success in the relevant area, as reflected by third party funding and publications.
  • Leadership experience in multi-professional scientific work groups

In observance of legal regulations, the appointment will normally be made on the basis of a lifetime civil servant status (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit).

The appointment will be carried out as a joint appointment (“Jülicher Modell”; appointment by the University of Heidelberg, granting of a leave of absence to the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim).

The University is seeking to increase the percentage of female professors and is explicitly encouraging qualified female scientists to apply. Given equal qualifications, aptitude and professional performance handicapped applicants will receive priority.

Applications, entailing the usual documents, shall be sent within three weeks after the date of publication and addressed to: Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät Mannheim der Universität Heidelberg, Herrn Prof. Dr. Sergij Goerdt, Dekanat Haus 24, Theodor-Kutzer-Ufer 1-3, 68167 Mannheim, Germany.
