Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks distinguished leadership as

Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences

The Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) supports the Laboratory Director in accomplishing the Laboratory’s mission by providing leadership and strategic vision for the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD). The Physical Sciences Directorate encompasses four divisions: Materials Science and Technology, Chemical Sciences, Physics, and Center for Nanophase Materials Science, with a total annual R&D budget of nearly $200 million. The ALD will develop and drive the strategy to enhance synergy among the divisions of PSD, with major research facilities at ORNL, as well as support integrated multidisciplinary teams across divisions and directorates.

The ALD acts as a liaison to external agencies and other national laboratories, promotes partnerships with academia and industry, and guides the development of externally sponsored basic and applied research projects and programs consistent with the Laboratory’s overall vision and strategy. The successful candidate will collaborate with the senior leaders in the Laboratory to evaluate science and human capabilities, devise strategies to sustain and evolve those capabilities, and identify future mission requirements. The ALD serves as an advocate for the Laboratory’s workforce, and develops strategies to maintain a vigorous research environment.
