POSTDOCTORAL STAFF FELLOW (BIOLOGIST/MICROBIOLOGIST/IMMUNOLOGIST), RG-0401/0403
The Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Office of Vaccines Research & Review (OVRR) is recruiting to fill a Staff Fellow position in the Merkel Research Group within the Laboratory of Respiratory & Special Pathogens. OVRR protects and enhances public health by assuring that available vaccines, allergenic extracts, and related products are safe and effective.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in a well-funded research program, utilizing the baboon model of pertussis to advance our understanding of pertussis disease and immunology. They will be expected to conduct independent research with a focus on pertussis pathogenesis, transmission or immunology.
This position will be filled through FDA's Staff Fellowship program. The appointment is for two years with opportunities for renewal. This is an Excepted Service position under Title 42. Applications will be accepted from all groups of qualified persons, including non-citizens. No previous Federal experience is required. Appointment does not confer any entitlement to conversion to a position in the competitive service and no entitlement to Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) appeals rights.
QUALIFICATIONS: One year probationary period may be required; Official transcripts required; Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (M.D., D.V.M., etc.) required. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the basic requirement for the desired occupational series below.
Biology, RG-0401: Degree in Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Microbiology, RG-403: Degree in Microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that include at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. -OR- Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that include course as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Expertise in bacterial genetics, bacterial pathogenesis, immunology or animal models of disease; and excellent written and oral communication skills are also required.
