Research in the Cammidge group focuses on the design and synthesis of novel molecular materials and super/supramolecular assemblies. Recent breakthroughs include the first controlled synthesis of hybrid materials (between porphyrins and phthalocyanines) and the assembly of stacked arrays. We develop new syntheses in order to allow the controlled construction of intricate molecular species capable of advanced function in areas such as molecular (plastic) electronics, solar energy conversion and security. Within this project the researcher will be trained in molecular and supramolecular synthesis, working on a unique project at the forefront of modern chemistry. The PhD project will focus on new synthetic developments towards complex and functional assemblies of multiple-units for applications including molecular magnetism. Specifically the researcher will exploit new syntheses of unsymmetrical porphyrin building-blocks to construct covalently linked dyads. The dyads will encapsulate an additional phthalocyanine chromophore in the first step of molecular machine assembly. Advanced spectroscopic and characterisation techniques will be employed for interrogation of the molecular structures and assemblies, including collaboration with complementary research groups. Professional skills will be enhanced through courses including scientific writing, problem solving, intellectual property and literature searching. Research students have daily open-access to the primary supervisor (Professor Cammidge) in addition to weekly group meetings. The project start date is flexible.

Funding notes

This PhD project is offered on a self-funding basis. It is open to applicants with funding or those applying to funding sources. Details of tuition fees can be found at

A bench fee is also payable on top of the tuition fee to cover specialist equipment or laboratory costs required for the research. The amount charged annually will vary considerably depending on the nature of the project and applicants should contact the primary supervisor for further information about the fee associated with the project.
