Your Role

The successful candidate will participate in the activities of the Security and Trust of Software Systems research group at the Computer Science and Communications research unit of University of Luxembourg.


The selected candidate will join the research project AlgoReCell (Computational Models and Algorithms for Predicting Cell Reprogramming Determinants with High Efficiency and High Fidelity), co-funded by FNR (Luxembourg National Research fund; grant INTER/ANR/15/11191283) and ANR (French National Research Agency; grant ANR-16-CE12-0034). The goal of AlgoReCell is to design a computational framework for the prediction of reprogramming strategies driven by three main challenges:

  1. the systematic and complete identification of RDs according to a discrete model of gene networks;

  2. the assessment of RD-dependent reprogramming efficiency and fidelity;

  3. the selection of best combination of RDs candidates taking into account the uncertainties in the model, and the potential state heterogeneity of the cell population.

The resulting framework will be evaluated experimentally for the reprogramming of adipocyte and osteoblast cells.

The focus of the research associate position is to address the modelling of fidelity and efficiency of cell population re- programming by considering probabilistic and stochastic features of networks. This will result in a quantitative evaluation of RDs with respect to the probability (fidelity) and time (efficiency) to reach the targeted attractor.   • Shaping research directions and producing results in the area of computational systems biology

  • Attracting funding in cooperation with our research partners

  • Coordinating projects and delivering outputs

  • Providing guidance to PhD and MSc students

  • Disseminating results through scientific publications

  • Organizing relevant workshops and conferences

Your Profile

  • A PhD degree in computer science, systems biology, engineering or related field

  • Competitive research record in related research areas

  • Strong development skills (Java, C++)

  • Strong background in one or several of the following areas: formal methods, optimisation, control methods, Markov chains, probabilistic/stochastic analysis

  • Interest in interdisciplinary research, knowledge in biology would be an advantage

  • Commitment, team working, self-motivated and a critical mind

  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory
