The University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Physiology (PSP), a unit with roots in research and education dating back to 1910. The College of Medicine recognizes that robust basic research is integral to a thriving translational research enterprise and sees PSP as a key component of this vision. The department's mission is to advance the fields of physiology, pharmacology and toxicology through innovative biomedical research and outstanding teaching at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels. It maintains close working relationships with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.
PSP is currently composed of 20 primary faculty with major research foci in cardiovascular sciences, gastrointestinal/epithelial biology, systems biology and circadian rhythms, neuroscience and neuropharmacology of addiction and ion channel biology. This research effort is supported by extramural funding of approximately $6 million dollars. The education program includes two outstanding Ph.D. granting programs (Systems Biology and Physiology, and Molecular, Cellular and Biochemical Pharmacology) currently training ~40 students with support from an NIH T32 Training Grant. Additionally, the program has two Master's Programs (Physiology; Safety Pharmacology) with a current enrollment of 42 students, and plays a major role in the College's Undergraduate Program in Medical Science.
We are seeking a high energy individual with the foresight and management skills to build one of the preeminent programs in Pharmacology and Physiology in the U.S. The new chair will have a strong and on-going research program in basic and/or translational research with evidence of outstanding teaching accomplishment and a clear record of successful administrative leadership. The chair should articulate a compelling vision for PSP that will be executed through i) overseeing a significant expansion of the research and teaching faculty, ii) providing mentorship and support of professional development for existing faculty, iii) advocating for the department at the local, national and international levels, and iv) implementing time-tested as well as creative methods for obtaining resources for departmental infrastructure and ongoing activities.
Minimum Requirements: Preferred applicants must hold a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or M.D. degree in Pharmacology, Physiology or related field.
