Postdoctoral Researcher on DNA Synthesis using CMOS Addressable Electrodes

Conventional microarrays using in-house spotting technologies to deposit cDNA fragments have been largely replaced by commercial high-density oligonucleotide-arrays. For their production, the sites of interest are optically addressed to allow for in-situ DNA synthesis. Here, instead of using optical methods, we propose the use of electrically induced reactions to develop a DNA array with an unpreceded resolution. In other words, by sequentially adding nucleotides and applying a potential to individually addressable electrode sites to induce a coupling reaction, nucleotides can be incorporated on predefined locations.
Although electrically induced coupling can be used for various site-selective coupling strategies, we aim to make a high-density oligonucleotide array for select biological applications. One major application, in collaboration with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, focuses on the digitization of pathological analysis by linking pheno- to genotypes using DNA arrays in combination with sequence analysis. In other words, the proposed project takes advantage of both CMOS scaling and the recent boost in next-generation sequencing technologies to enable truly innovative, high-end biological applications.
In this position, you will:
- Optimize design of experiments, independently performs tests in the lab, and interpret results;
- Construct, modify, calibrate, operate and set up equipment used for performing your experimental work;
- Collect, analyze and report scientific data leading to valid conclusions and keep abreast of cutting-edge methodology in the areas of electrical DNA synthesis on chip.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
You are a hands-on person with excellent engineering skills and a personal drive to achieve project goals. You have a PhD degree in (bio)engineering or electrochemistry. You are driven to work in a research lab environment and have a special interest in technology. You have proven experience in electrochemistry. You have not only performed or worked with these techniques, you also optimized and designed assays yourself. You are familiar with PCB design, test and trouble-shooting. Prior experience in DNA synthesis or diffusion modelling is considered an asset. You have a good overview of diagnostic techniques and methodologies. You have good communication skills since you will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team of imec researchers, PhD students and industrial researchers. You are a team player. Given the international character of imec, excellent knowledge of English is a must.
