Deputy Director General
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is Ireland’s national foundation for investment in scientific and engineering research. SFI’s mission is to progress Ireland’s society and economy by supporting the best scientific and engineering research while building an awareness of the role, impact and opportunities science creates. SFI is a key implementing organisation for the Government (spacing) strategy Innovation 2020 which aims to position Ireland as a global leader in scientific and engineering research, discovery and innovation.
The Deputy Director General will support the Director General and the Board in ensuring the efficient and effective management and development of the organisation and its range of services in pursuit of the aims and objectives set by the Board. As this is a key strategic role for SFI the preferred candidate will be capable of deputising for the Director General, will lead the execution of SFI’s strategy and will attend all SFI Board meetings. The position holder will also have wide responsibility for developing new programmes, ‘special projects’ for example related to Brexit opportunities and the development of key external relations and international collaborations.
Applicants will have an extensive track record of strategic leadership and general management at a senior level in original or applied research, in an enterprise/industry relevant to scientific or engineering research, or in education. The person must demonstrate the capacity to provide additional leadership and management to an organisation as complex and diverse as SFI. An excellent communicator and influencer, the appointee will have a PhD in a relevant scientific area combined with well-honed organisational development, stakeholder management and programme delivery skills. Familiarity with public sector organisations and their role within Government would be an additional advantage.
