TILEC, a Center of Excellence at Tilburg University, is looking for an assistant professor working in the broader field of competition law. The selected candidate is expected to contribute to TILEC's world-leading research in the field and provide academic leadership in an interdisciplinary academic environment. An early record in the interaction of competition law with innovation, digitalization, standardization and/or data science will be an asset.

The holder of the position will have the following functions:

Research (0.6fte)

  • Actively contribute to the operationalization of the TILEC research program on the governance of economic activity, and its renewal. For this position, TILEC is particularly interested in candidates with a proven record in the interaction of competition and innovation.

  • Pursue academically path-breaking research leading to excellent publications, in terms of originality, significance and rigor, as measured by international standards.

  • Engage in the dialogue between law and economics, especially through the elaboration and production of interdisciplinary research.

Administration and coordination of TILEC research (0,2fte)

  • Co-organize and coordinate the weekly TILEC internal events and TILEC seminars.

  • Contribute to the dissemination of TILEC research and its effective communication.

  • Contribute to the day-to-day management of TILEC.

  • Represent TILEC where appropriate and act as a liaison for TILEC with other research institutes within Tilburg Law School and Tilburg University.

Teaching (0.2 fte)

  • Teach and coordinate courses at the undergraduate and/or LLM programs that TILEC is involved in, including the interdisciplinary bachelor program on data science.

  • Lead the efforts for curriculum development within TILEC.

Note that while we are looking for a researcher with a profile in competition law, and in particular with its interaction with innovation, standardization or data science, the administrative tasks and possibly also the teaching tasks might cover other topics falling within the broader TILEC theme of “governance of economic activity”.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a doctoral degree in Law (PhD), or at least have submitted the manuscript of their dissertation, with the approval of their supervisor.

  • Ideally, have two or more years of experience after the PhD, as a post-doctoral researcher or early-career academic.

  • Have a research interest and expertise in the broader areas of the TILEC research program with a distinct focus on substantive competition law, as evidenced by their Ph.D., publications and other activities.

  • Be interested in (and preferably used to) working in an interdisciplinary environment with other legal scholars and economists.

  • Have demonstrated ability - or strong potential - to produce and publish research at international/world-leading levels of excellence.

  • Be able to deliver high-quality undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching in law, including in general EU law.

  • Be able to undertake certain administrative duties autonomously and preferably have some experience in undertaking such duties (e.g. organization of workshops, management of projects, etc).

  • Be able and willing to work in a team and undertake administration tasks.

  • Be proactive and accountable, able to prioritize across responsibilities, and manage varied commitments.

  • Have excellent interpersonal and strong and effective communication skills.

  • Have perfect command of English. Knowledge of Dutch would be an asset, but it is not required. However, willingness to learn Dutch is required.

  • Be available to start working preferably as of 1 September 2017 or soon afterwards.

  • Be present at Tilburg University during working hours, and commit to integrate in the environment provided by TILEC and the Tilburg Law School.
