We currently have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in our Research, Development, Testing & Evaluation group, part of the Global Health Surveillance & Diagnostics Division, which is available immediately and located in Gaithersburg, MD. The successful candidate will join a team of researchers actively conducting research in infectious disease diagnostics, biosurveillance, microbiology, virology, and microbial forensics for a variety of government and industrial clients.

We aim to attract new talent into MRIGlobal’s existing pool of forward thinking research scientists focused on applied research in infectious disease clinical diagnostics, environmental / agricultural biosurveillance and microbial forensics. Appointments will be made for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility of additional extensions.

Principal Accountabilities and Success Factors

Successful candidates will have a passion for applied research, and developing technically sound solutions for real-world problems. Examples of research activities may include one or more of the following efforts:

Design and develop state of the art approaches to address public health problems in infectious disease (i.e. antimicrobial resistance or emerging infectious diseases), primarily using immunological, microbiological and/or biochemical strategies; Design, develop and validate clinical infectious disease diagnostic assays under Design Control (21 CFR 820.30) to support FDA PMA or 510(k) premarket notification, primarily focusing on immunodiagnostics; Develop and validate innovative immunological and/or biochemical strategies to detect biothreat agents in challenging matrices for biosurveillance or microbial forensic applications.

Publication of research in peer-reviewed journals is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

A recent Ph.D. and experience in immunology, microbiology, virology, and/or biochemistry is required, as described below:

  • In vitro immunological techniques, especially experience with immunoassays (i.e. ELISA, Luminex)
  • Tissue /cell culture
  • Microbiology techniques (experience with one or more of the ESKAPE pathogens and/or with one or more of the biothreat pathogens is desired but not required). Alternatively, those with a background in virology are also encouraged to apply
  • Desired (but not required) skills include: Western Blot, SDS-PAGE, gel electrophoresis, next generation sequencing and genomics
