One to two PhD student positions are available in State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an externally funded research program of whole liver organ growing ex situ. Applicants should have a Master in bioscience or a Medical degree. Applications will be reviewed upon completion, but for full consideration should be received by June 15, 2017.
The work involves liver xenograft conversion to an allograft for a given species of animal. The effort takes place in two locations: 1. Initial training in the required techniques is outlined below and is followed by work at an incubator located in Brooklyn, one of the five boroughs of New York City and offers ready access to the cultural and recreational opportunities in Manhattan and the greater New York area.
The successful candidate will receive training, at a laboratory located abroad in Hefei, Anhui Province, China) in the necessary research skills: 1) isolation rat livers, liver perfusion under varying conditions, pathology (tissue sections, HE staining, IHC, and senescent cell, apoptotic cell, and preoperative cell detection in tissues. Inclusive in this instruction is the operation of myriad of laboratory instruments, 2) proper methods to transplant livers into animals such as rats and pigs, 3) use of a micro-injection system for altering xenografts to allografts by integrating a foreign genome. Further efforts will be required to evaluate the new allograft liver function in vivo. The successful candidates’ time in China will vary depending on their initial skill level but could last up to one year. Native English speaking is preferred.
Well-qualified applicants will receive an offer of financial support which typically includes a stipend commensurate with NIH guidelines and the payment of all applicable tuition and fees on behalf of the student.
The supervisor provides free of charge, round-trip air ticket, one room per person (about 120 to 150 sq feet with a shared bathroom) and meals (work days - Monday to Friday) while abroad in Hefei, Anhui Province, China.
