Position Summary

Valera is seeking an Associate Director/Director and Project Leader, with a track record of discovery of antibacterial/anti-parasitic vaccines and/or therapeutics, to lead their antibacterial discovery efforts through to early clinical research. Applicants should have a PhD or an MD/PhD with at least 5-10 years of drug discovery experience.  The ideal candidate will have been a key contributor to the discovery of several antibacterial vaccines/therapeutics that have reached the early clinical testing phase. (S)He will be adept at working in a fluid environment, and foster a strong collaborative spirit internally and externally.  This is an excellent opportunity to work in an innovative environment on a transformative infectious diseases platform.

Responsibilities

Reporting to Valera's CSO, the Associate Director will be involved in:

  • Identifying appropriate antibacterial approaches and ensuring their successful execution
  • Personally leading cross-functional teams to progress projects from pre-clinical to the early clinical phase
  • Identifying and nurture relationships with CROs and leading academic centers with the capabilities and patient samples to characterize the immune response and efficacy of novel vaccines and therapeutics
  • Supervise and eventually grow a small team of scientists/RAs to establish and develop capabilities to characterize the immune and therapeutic responses for anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic approaches
  • As a member of the Research Leadership team, helping shape the overall portfolio of approaches and problem-solve their technical execution

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD or MD/PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology or Biochemistry
  • 5 years of experience in antibacterial or anti-parasitic vaccines/therapeutics
  • Track record of leading at least one project through to IND or other equivalent early clinical milestone

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or MD/PhD in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology or Biochemistry
  • 10 years of experience in antibacterial or anti-parasitic vaccines/therapeutics
  • Track record of leading several projects through to IND or other equivalent early clinical milestone
  • Several years of supervisory experience
