The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine (http://mgm.unm.edu/index.html) and University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (http://cancer.unm.edu/) are seeking a tenure-track faculty with expertise in cancer immunology and a focused interest in both basic and translational research to contribute to our anticancer therapeutic programs.

Areas of interest are aligned and synergize with the Cancer Center research programs and activities and are meant to develop new directions in Cancer Immunology spearheaded by the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology department, where a critical mass of immunologists, as well as cancer researchers exist. 

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 400-mile radius. One of the premier cancer centers nationwide, the UNM CCC has 128 board-certified oncology physicians, forming New Mexico’s largest cancer care team. It treats about 60 percent of adults and virtually all the children in New Mexico diagnosed with cancer — more than 10,000 people— from every county in the state in more than 135,000 clinic visits each year. Through its partnership with the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance, an “exemplary national model for cancer health care delivery,” the UNM CCC offers access to more than 160 clinical trials to New Mexicans in every part of the state. Annual research funding of more than $72 million supports the UNM CCC’s 132 cancer scientists. Working with partners at Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and New Mexico State University, they have developed new diagnostics and drugs for leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, liver and pancreatic cancer, brain cancer, and melanoma; garnered 33 new patents and 117 patents pending; and launched 13 new biotechnology companies since 2010. The successful candidate will benefit form the new programmatic goals led by Molecular Genetics and Microbiology department combining immunology and cancer research, and will have exceptional opportunities for synergism and interactions within the Cancer Center and its scientific partners, with multiple translational and clinical opportunities.

Appointment is in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and is open rank, depending on qualifications and evidence of established research programs. The successful applicant will develop a rigorous research program on immunology, inflammation, and/or autophagy in Cancer Biology, participate in departmental activities including graduate and medical school teaching. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

• Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent

• Eligible to work in the United States

Desirable Qualifications:

•         Strong record of scientific accomplishments with a specific expertise in any of the following substantive areas:  (1) T-cell biology, immune control of anti-tumor response, tumor-mediated immune tolerance, identification of new immunological targets, and/or immunotherapeutics. (2) Novel approaches to enhance immunotherapy in Cancer including autophagy and other approaches to overcome the immunosuppressive environment in tumors

•         Current grant funding with Principal Investigator status or high probability of obtaining and maintaining external funding

•         Potential for research and educational interactions with members of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology

•         Synergy with Cancer Center programs and activities
