Why Patients Need You

Pfizer's purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients' lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer's purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in the discovery sciences, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best in class medicines to patients around the world.

What You Will Achieve

  • Pfizer at Kendall Square, Cambridge, has an open position at the Senior Scientist level for an independent, highly motivated and talented Protein Biochemist in the Target Protein Sciences (TPS) Group within the Department of Biomedicine Design (BMD). The TPS mission is focused on enabling biotherapeutic drug discovery programs across all therapeutic research units by producing high quality target proteins, cell lines, and other tools for biotherapeutic antibody discovery and characterization, protein therapeutic development, gene and RNA based therapy development, biological and biophysical assays, and protein structures.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently design and perform purification strategies for recombinant proteins from a variety of host cells (mammalian, insect, and bacterial cells).
  • Design protein constructs for mammalian and bacterial cell protein expression.
  • Troubleshoot and persevere on difficult projects to successful conclusions.
  • Physical characterization of purified proteins using appropriate instrumentation.
  • Responsible for supporting the needs of multiple drug discovery projects and science objectives in parallel.
  • Close collaboration with members of the TPE group to advance the group's remit.
  • Maintain close interactions with colleagues across the BMD group and liaise with cross-functional project teams to advise and to communicate progress.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, structural biology or a related discipline with at least 2 years relevant postdoctoral or industry experience.
  • Strong documented experience in protein biochemistry, protein purification (using affinity and traditional chromatographic techniques), protein modification using enzymatic and chemical methods, and biophysical characterization.
  • Strong documented experience in protein construct design.
  • Hands-on, extensive experience with instrumentation essential for protein purification, especially AKTA FPLC and Agilent HPLC systems, SEC-MALS, and mass spectrometer.
  • Extensive experience with SDS PAGE, Western blotting and protein characterization techniques.
  • Demonstrated capabilities to independently design, implement, and troubleshoot difficult protein purification and protein modification experiments and persist to successful outcomes.
  • Experience in developing and performing refolding protocols for insoluble proteins from bacteria.
  • Publication record reflecting scientific drive and creativity in protein sciences.
  • Must be able to thrive and deliver results on goals in a fast-paced, dynamic and highly multi-tasking environment.
  • Must work well independently and as a member of teams in an inclusive manner.
  • Must possess excellent communication and presentation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in purification and handling of various classes of secreted proteins.
  • Experience with methods for successful purification of integral membrane proteins is highly preferred.
  • Experience with creating and characterizing protein-protein and/or protein-small molecule complexes.
  • Familiarity with recombinant expression of proteins in mammalian, insect and/or bacterial will be given special consideration.
  • Experience using Biacore, Octet, or other biosensor instrumentation.
