Job Information

Job ID: 15827 / Position # 00015457

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) is undertaking a phased expansion of its medical class size at the four-year Augusta University/University of Georgia (AU/UGA) Medical Partnership Campus in Athens to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians that threatens the health of Georgians. To accommodate this exciting new phase of our growth, we are seeking 12 experienced, innovative medical educators (PhD, MD, DO, DVM, PharmD or equivalent) across all disciplines to teach primarily in our pre-clinical curriculum (Years 1 and 2). Clinician Educators will also have the opportunity to serve across all four years of the curriculum, including Clinical Skills, Community and Population Health, Simulation and Ultrasound, and clinical clerkship Academic Half Days.

Our students study basic and clinical science in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies into large and small group settings. We seek outstanding, team-oriented teachers who will share our excitement in continuing to build this dynamic and innovative educational program. Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate a commitment to educational research or other scholarly endeavors. The AU/UGA Medical Partnership campus offers unique opportunities for medical education research, as well as research in cell and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and an array of other disciplines through collaboration with faculty in the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Public Health, and other units across the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Successful candidates will have a primary appointment at MCG at Augusta University, with the opportunity for an adjunct faculty appointment in the appropriate department at the University of Georgia.

Background Information

Ten years ago, Augusta University and the University of Georgia partnered to create a four-year undergraduate medical education campus in Athens, GA in response to a state legislature-sponsored initiative to increase Georgia’s physician workforce needs (Tripp-Umbach, Expanding Medical Education in Georgia, January, 2008). The AU/UGA Medical Partnership has served as an incubator for evidence-based medical education that has successfully combined the significant instructional and research resources of UGA, the state's flagship land-grant research university, with the expertise of MCG at AU, Georgia's only public medical school. In 2016, the AU/UGA Medical Partnership campus, as part of MCG at AU, received continued (full) 8-year accreditation for physician training.  Students graduating from our institution have consistently matched in top tier programs throughout the United States. Successful candidates will join a cadre of enthusiastic and talented educators who have created a collaborative environment for developing, implementing and teaching basic and clinical sciences.
