Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) and Deerfield Management have entered a multi-year collaboration to create the Center for Protein Degradation (CPD) at DFCI. The Center for Protein Degradation (CPD) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Scientific Director to oversee and coordinate the Center’s scientific activities and operations. The Scientific Director will report directly to the Center Directors and will work closely with them to fulfill the Center’s scientific mission and goals. This is an exciting opportunity to help implement and operate the Center for Protein Degradation as a global center of excellence for targeted protein degradation discovery.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee, coordinate, and manage daily Center operations, including wet lab and informatics activities. Act as a liaison, working with faculty and staff within and outside the center to coordinate CPD activities within DFCI and with external entities (e.g., CROs, etc.)
  • Provide oversight, guidance, mentorship, and development of CPD scientific staff (PhD and non-PhDs)
  • Assist with the prioritization, selection, and design of Center research projects and activities
  • Ensure the successful and timely execution of projects, working with scientific group leaders, Directors, and Executive Director to anticipate, identify, and resolve issues on an ongoing basis.
  • Serve as the chief scientific interface between CPD and Deerfield
  • Work with CPD leadership to identify new technologies, methods, and/or innovations that may accelerate or improve protein degradation research and direct projects in high-priority areas.
  • Partner with research scientists and other scientific staff to conduct new method/ technology/tool development, validation and/or proof-of-concept studies.
  • Evaluate and oversee the development of the Center’s research infrastructure and systems
  • Work with the Center Directors and Executive Director to develop and implement policies, procedures, and tools that ensure efficient Center operations that meet all regulatory guidelines.
  • Present reports on the Center’s performance to CPD staff, Directors, and Deerfield and DFCI leadership
  • Author or co-author scientific manuscripts. Assist with proposal writing and progress reports.
  • Present research results on behalf of the CPD at scientific meetings and related venues.

Qualifications

The CPD Scientific Director must fulfill the following requirements:

  • PhD or MD level education; at least 10 years of postdoctoral experience. Prior leadership of large research projects is preferred
  • Experience/concentration in biomedical science (including chemistry), with increasing responsibility in biomedical research and/or drug discovery and development
  • Background/experience in oncology drug development is preferred.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and emerging technologies such as: small molecular hits to leads trajectory, including HTS screening, medicinal chemistry, structural biology, proteomics, target ID, PK/PD, and ADME.
  • Highly organized and self-directed - works well in a constantly changing environment
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of individuals—from trainees to senior leaders—in both academics and industry
  • Entrepreneurial attitude and skills, including a willingness to take risks
  • Capable of highly-independent work as well as being a team player and role model
  • Strong organizational, project management and supervisory skills, with the demonstrated ability to develop and manage complex projects in a matrix environment
  • Superior communication skills(written and verbal)
  • Strong attention to detail

This is a 40 hour per week, full time position.
