RESEARCH SCIENTIST POSITION
SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, http://sio.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) invites applications for a full-time Research position to assume the principal investigator role in Project IDA (International Deployment of Accelerometers) and oversee a research group that provides intellectual leadership in the field of global seismology. Project IDA, which is based at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, employs a full-time staff of 13 to operate and maintain some 40 seismic stations globally. This network serves as one of the fundamental tools for basic research used by academic geophysicists worldwide. The project is responsible for maintaining the timely flow of data to the international research community and the monitoring agencies, including the US National Earthquake Information Center, the International Tsunami Warning Center, and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization. Project IDA is funded by a cooperative agreement between the Incorporated Research Institution for Seismology (IRIS) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Project IDA is 43-years old and recently received a 5-year/$16.7M extension from the National Science Foundation. More details about the project can be found at https://ida.ucsd.edu.
This appointment may be at the Associate or Full Research level, with rank and salary dependent upon qualifications, experience and the UCSD pay scales. The position is funded by SIO at 25% during the academic year with the remainder coming from extramural grants which, historically, have been provided by NSF under the cooperative agreement. Researchers at SIO also have the opportunity to obtain lectureship appointments in the SIO Department, serve as graduate student advisors and conduct research.
We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist to direct Project IDA, and provide intellectual leadership in the field of global seismology. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with instrument networks. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of network operation and maintenance such as station maintenance and data quality evaluation, be responsible for long-range planning, and proposal preparation and on all matters of critical impact to the Project. The successful candidate will represent Project IDA on key committees in the international seismological community, work closely with SIO faculty to keep them apprised of project goals and progress, and incorporate suggestions and research results from the research community into network development.
The position requires a PhD in a relevant field and candidates should have a competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level. The successful candidate will be expected to support an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
For full consideration applications must be received by June 30, 2019. All applications and related materials should be submitted via Academic Personnel On-Line RECRUIT at: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF02083
SIO is a world-renowned center of research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.
UCSD is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence and diversity (http://diversity.ucsd.edu).
