The Molecule Innovation Hub (MIH) is looking for an associate who will contribute to the Safety and Industrial Hygiene aspects of our company. In this role you are responsible for ensuring that the goals of a safe and healthy work environment are actively pursued in an effective and conscientious manner. You will provide tactical day-to-day support and compliance assurance with all laws, statutes and regulations, and internal Lilly HSE standards. Key focus areas will included exposure assessment and control and containment of potent compounds and associated operations / processes. You will be responsible for helping to promote the safety culture across the organization by placing a primary focus on accident prevention, hazard assessment and employee occupational safety and health. Willingness to work across functions and sites in a highly mobile environment is a key aspect of your role.

Major responsibilities include the administration of the following programs:
  • Serve as the local Chemical Hygiene Contact for the business and ensure compliance with the Lilly Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)
  • Support Laboratory Safety initiatives under the direction of the Chemical Hygiene Officer
  • Execute commissioning and start up HSE reviews for new operations and equipment
  • Identify appropriate engineering controls and containment equipment for potent compound handling and conduct any associated training on how to safely use such devices.
  • Work with research scientists and area management in implementing safe handling practices for potent active pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Implementation of hazard communication program for R&D pharmaceutical compounds in a rapidly changing environment
  • Provide incident review and follow up to safety incidents and actions reported via HSE Event Management system
  • Execute qualitative and quantitative exposure assessment surveys to verify exposure control and containment of potent processes.
  • Collaborate well with multiple team members and external HSE consultants, as needed.
  • Point of contact for shared HSE programs within LRL and will own and manage several HSE programs that may include Hazard Communication, Allergy Prevention, Personal Protective Equipment, and Hearing Conservation.
  • Craft, assign and administer applicable HSE training for personnel working within the business
  • Communicate workplace hazards to employees and management and influence change when necessary
  • Provide support to LRL Lilly Research Lab CRO/CMO HSE Due Diligence program, as needed
  • Review and assign Medical Health Surveillance requirements for SMDD personnel.
  • Provide general safety support in the areas of Fire Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Ergonomics, Machine Guarding, Electrical Safety, Lockout /Tagout, and Compressed Gases.

Other responsibilities include execution of the following programs:
  • Containment engineering
  • Reproductive hazard reviews
  • Accident investigation support
  • Health and safety auditing
  • Indoor air quality investigations
  • Communication of toxicology and risk information

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering or Science or related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years laboratory or pharmaceutical Health, Safety, and Environmental experience in academic or industrial setting.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience working with highly hazardous chemicals or potent Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) preferred.
  • Professional certification (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional) preferred or individual is actively pursuing certification in the next 1-2 years.
