Do you love the idea of working in a science and research environment in one of the most highly respected research organizations? Do you have a broad view of future IT developments and scientific topics? Are you looking for a new challenge with a high level of responsibility?

The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft is looking to employ a
Head of the Max Planck Computing and Data Facility

The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e. V. is a self-administered science organization funded by the German government and the federal states. It conducts basic research in the fields of the natural sciences and humanities, in currently 84 Institutes and research units.
The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) is a competence centre of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. It supports scientists from all Max Planck Institutes in the development and optimization of applications and algorithms for scientific high-performance computing (HPC) and in the design and implementation of data-intensive projects. The MPCDF operates the MPG’s supercomputer, MPG HPC clusters and data repositories for many Max Planck Institutes, as well as a modern infrastructure for data management and long-term archiving. The MPCDF is located in a highly prospering environment at the Garching research campus near Munich.

Your area of responsibility includes both the management of the large team of experts and the strategic-conceptual design of the competence centre. You control the HPC and Data Services, as well as the renewal of the IT equipment. You are responsible for implementing these services in practice (operative management) and for further developing these for the scientific work at the MPG at the highest level. You are responsible for market monitoring in the area of Scientific Computing and the resulting further strategic development of the IT landscape at the MPG. Furthermore, you represent the MPG in internal, national/international IT committees at the strategic level and in relation to IT companies.

You have relevant evidence of your qualifications and experience in management and Scientific Computing and a high level of IT competence (hardware/software). You bring a genuine interest in science, particularly in the primary fields of work of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft - optionally supplemented by your own successful research programme - and a very broad strategic perspective in relation to future IT developments and scientific topics. You have management and social competence, negotiating skills (ideally, you have experience with the purchase of large computers), and a highly developed orientation in problem solving and service in the context of new challenges. Your qualities include flexibility and an open approach to new issues.

An excellent knowledge of German and English is essential for your activities.

In your work as Head of the MPCDF, you can expect an unusually attractive, excellent and highly networked environment at the Garching research campus, very close to modern research facilities, businesses and the Bavarian capital. With an excellent team (around 60 colleagues), embedded in the best infrastructure with numerous opportunities for strategic networking on campus and with all Institutes of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and beyond, you will receive the best possible conditions for starting work in your field of responsibility. Additionally, the MPG offers attractive employee benefits, with services for onboarding, balancing work, life and family, a modern corporate health management system and flexible working hours. We look forward to receiving your application. Become a part of the Max Planck Community!

The salary and provisions depend on your personal qualification and the individual organizational arrangement, up to a comparable remuneration of a W3-position, plus additional benefits.

The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft strives to achieve gender balance and diversity. Women are therefore expressly encouraged to apply. The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft is also committed to increasing the number of employees with severe disabilities in its workforce. Applications from disabled persons are expressly desired.

Have we awakened your interest? If so, we look forward to receiving your complete online-application (https://recruitingapp-2669.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/982/Application/New/31) by April 5, 2019.
