Job Description

The Jankowsky lab seeks a postdoctoral fellow for several NIH-funded projects to examine fundamental questions in Alzheimer's disease using genetically engineered mouse models.  One project will test how aging influences the brain's response to the neurological insult of amyloid formation at cellular, circuit, and behavioral levels; another project examines how the cellular source of amyloid beta affects plaque distribution and physiological consequences.  We seek a motivated candidate who is intellectually and experimentally flexible enough to advance multiple projects simultaneously.  Researchers will work as part of a team combining mouse genetic engineering, viral circuit manipulation, hippocampal slice electrophysiology, and basic biochemistry to elucidate the complex interaction between genetics, aging, and cognitive health.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold (or soon receive) a Ph.D. in neuroscience, genetics, or a related discipline and have a strong background in molecular biology.  Experience with genetically engineered mouse models is preferred but not required.  Successful applicants should be highly self-motivated and intellectually independent.

Environment

Successful candidates will work in a highly collaborative, small group of scientists with projects spanning diverse facets of neurodegeneration and depression.

The laboratory is located at the main Baylor College of Medicine campus which enjoys a vibrant and collegial scientific environment.  BCM itself is located in Houston's Texas Medical Center, a 1,000-acre complex of over 50 independent institutions within easy access.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the US and is home to a diverse international population.  The city offers great restaurants, a warm climate, and affordable housing.

Additional information

The appointment is for an initial term of one year, with the expectation of continued support pending successful progress.  The position comes with competitive salary and benefits.  International applicants are welcome and will have support of the BCM International Services Office for visa applications.  The start date is flexible, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
