Job Details

Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI), a nonprofit research organization in the Harvard Medical School/Longwood Medical Area and premier center for protein science, seeks a Head of Biological Discovery to lead our target selection and antibody validation programs. IPI operates a state-of-the-art platform for high-throughput discovery of antibodies targeting the entire human and mouse extracellular proteome that will serve as leads for new therapeutics and open-source research tools. The candidate will play an integral leadership role in shaping the direction of programs at IPI.

Working with senior leaders at IPI, the Head will 1) identify and prioritize protein targets involved in biomedically important processes; 2) design antigen constructs and screening strategies that maximize the discovery of antibodies that modulate biological processes and could be differentiated therapeutics; 3) organize workshops in which IPI-generated antibodies are distributed to the scientific community for validation and discovery of new biology; and 4) oversee the publication of workshop findings. These workshops represent a central element of the IPI mission to generate high-quality open source antibodies with significant engagement of the biomedical community.

This position uniquely straddles academics and therapeutics, with enormous prospects for biological discovery, intellectual property generation, and exciting scientific collaborations with the exceptional research community in the Harvard Medical School/Longwood Medical Area and beyond. Candidates should hold a PhD (or equivalent degree) and possess demonstrated expertise in structural immunology, structural neurobiology, or a related field. Experience in computational sequence analysis and sequence-based assessment of biological function is highly desirable. Exceptional communication, writing, and organizational skills are required. The ability to identify and forecast areas of research with therapeutic relevance is critical.

Interested candidates should send a CV and a brief statement of future research interests as a single PDF to careers@proteininnovation.org, and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the same address. Please include “Head of Biological Discovery” in the subject line.

IPI offers competitive compensation and benefits, including health and dental insurance, generous vacation and holiday time off, and retirement saving plans. IPI is an Equal Opportunity /Affirmative Action Employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, protected veteran status or disability.
