Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

of Gastrointestinal Health

The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences, Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and The Institutes of Energy and the Environment (IEE) of The Pennsylvania State University are seeking to hire a new tenure-track professor in Gastrointestinal Health. The expectation is for a 75% research, 25% teaching assignment. A Ph.D. in Cancer biology, physiology, biochemistry, or other relevant disciplines is required. Two years of postdoctoral employment with publications in gastrointestinal health and cancer biology is preferred. Utilization of modern approaches including metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and/or metabolomics as well as comparative approaches across species is encouraged. Successful candidates must possess excellent research, teaching, and grant writing skills, and demonstrate positive interpersonal relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with colleagues at Penn State and externally. Leadership experience is highly preferred. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and community is required. The faculty member will develop a strong, high profile independent research program supported by extramural funding to generate novel discoveries relevant to cancer, drug targets, and gastrointestinal physiology. Candidates with expertise in transcriptional regulation and cellular signaling associated with gastrointestinal health and environmental sensors are highly desirable. The individual is expected to collaborate in research with diverse investigators in the Department, College, and other units of the university. The successful individual will take an active role in the Penn State Cancer Institute (https://cancer.psu.edu/) and the growing Microbiome Center of Excellence (https://www.huck.psu.edu/institutes-and-centers/microbiome-center). In addition, the individual will be encouraged to participate in the Center for Molecular Toxicology and Carcinogenesis (http://www.cmtc.psu.edu/), and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (http://www.huck.psu.edu). Responsibilities of the faculty member will include training graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and undergraduate education by teaching an undergraduate pharmacology course in the department, and graduate education by developing a course in the area of their research expertise. The faculty member will also contribute to other courses through lectures and/or labs in courses related to her/his areas of expertise. Consistent with Penn State policies, the faculty member is expected to be a good citizen in the Department and to serve on Departmental, College and University committees as appropriate. She or he will comply with all relevant policies and maintain high ethical standards. The salary is competitive and commensurate with background and experience.
