Division Chief 

The Physical Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) anticipates the need for a Division Chief for its Time and Frequency Division (TFD) (http://www.nist.gov/pml/div688/) located on the NIST campus in Boulder, Colorado. The Division Chief of TFD is responsible for delivery of division services, the overall management of the division, and creating and supporting the research direction for the division.   In addition, the Division Chiefs is expected to play an active role helping to set and execute the goals of the Physical Measurement Laboratory as part of it senior leadership team. The TFD has more than 50 permanent scientific and engineering staff and over 70 students, postdoctoral candidates, and contractors.  Its permanent scientific and engineering staff consist primarily of physicists with PhDs.   The division maintains the standards for frequency and time for the United States, provides official time to the United States, and carries out a broad program of research and service activities in time and frequency metrology.  The latter research includes quantum information science, phase noise metrology, and the development and demonstration of stable and compact optical frequency standards.

Depending on the identified candidates professional background they will be hired as a Supervisory Physicist, ZP-1310, Grade V or a related position (GS15 equivalent).  Applicants Curriculum Vitae or Resume must provide positive evidence that they have performed highly creative or outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research, to a major advance in the discipline or field of science involved, or to major advances in science in general, can be rated under this provision for highly demanding research positions requiring similar abilities or show at least 1 year equivalent at the GS-14 level.  The position when available will be posted at (http://www.usajobs.gov).  The minimum qualification and education standards per the OPM qualification standards for ZP-1310 require you to meet one of the following: 1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics or Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
