Heart disease: the #1 killer of both men and women in the United States. Utilize your successful background in scientific mentorship to help us solve this—and other public health issues—by joining the Office of Education (OE) within the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH!

The Office of Education (OE) within the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research (DIR) is responsible for mentoring and training activities that advance the career progress of trainees for high school, college, medical and graduate students, through postdoctoral-level Ph.D. and M.D. recipients. The OE Director and Deputy Director maintain an awareness of national training efforts; provide advice to the NHLBI Director and staff regarding research in areas of training, diversity and inclusion interests; and collaborate with other NIH organizations to achieve the goals of maintaining an outstanding training environment. In addition, the OE champions the NHLBI’s diversity and inclusion roadmap by cultivating a culture of inclusion, creating and renewing a diverse workforce, and nurturing and retaining talent.

The Deputy Director, Office of Education will have specific responsibilities in the oversight of programs at the post-baccalaureate and undergraduate levels, and also serve as the Director of the RADM Helena O. Mishoe Fellowship Program, which provides intensive research training to post-baccalaureate trainees from backgrounds that are underrepresented in scientific research.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An M.S., M.D. or a Ph.D. as a Principal Investigator in a scientific discipline relevant to the mission of the NHLBI DIR;
  • A successful record of mentoring students and fellows in a laboratory and/or clinical setting;
  • Experience in obtaining and/or reviewing NIH grant applications;
  • A successful record of leading and/or facilitating the completion of diversity and inclusion initiatives, preferably in an academic setting. This includes demonstration of an in-depth knowledge on issues of: access, inclusion, diversity, equity, and multiculturalism in a large, complex organizational setting;
  • The ability to build consensus, find support, and reconcile competing interests;
  • Conflict resolution skills and the ability to find mutually acceptable solutions to difficult problems;
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated social media expertise to achieve institutional goals.
