The Department
The Department of Anatomy is one of the largest and longest-established departments at the University of Otago. Our staff teach and research a diverse range of exciting topics in the field of biomedical sciences, including neuroscience.
The Role
As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will be responsible for carrying out a project to systematically investigate how the brain arginine metabolism (the polyamine system in particular) changes in tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.
Duties will include:
- Enzyme assays, western blot, real-time quantitative PCR and high performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometric assays.
- Tissue collection and preparation.
- Data collection and data entry.
- Statistical analysis of data.
- Writing manuscripts reporting on research results for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Presenting findings at scientific meetings.
- Assisting in writing grant applications and pursuing funding opportunities.
- Assisting with writing progress reports to the funding organisation.
Your Skills and Experience
- PhD in an appropriate neuroscience or biological science.
- Experience in enzyme assays, western blot, real-time quantitative PCR and high performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometric assays.
- Evidence of ability to publish.
- A thorough approach to laboratory practice, accurate record-keeping, attention to detail and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people within a research environment.
- Ability to work without direct supervision, set priorities and allocate own timetable.
- Self-motivated, and committed to a research career in the biological sciences.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for two years and is available from 1 July 2019.
