As a member of the Helmholtz Association, Forschungszentrum Jülich makes an effective contribution to solving major challenges facing society in the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. It focuses on varied tasks in the area of research management and utilizes large, often unique, scientific infrastructure. Come and work with around 6,100 colleagues across a range of topics and disciplines at one of Europe’s largest research centres.

The Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) operates neutron scattering instruments at the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich. It provides access to these instruments for researchers from Germany and throughout the world. More than 1,000 scientists visit the MLZ every year to perform experiments in the physical, chemical, biological and materials sciences. In addition, JCNS is pursuing a research program in the field of soft matter science and condensed matter physics.

In the Scientific Computing Group of JCNS at MLZ we develop software for the analysis of scattering experiments. We support instrument users, and participate in exemplary data analyses. We closely cooperate with other European research centres.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoctoral Scientist for Research Software development and data analysis

Your Job:

  • develop open-source software to reduce, visualize, model, and fit experimental data
  • lead the development of software used at specific diffractometers or spectrometers
  • cooperate with instrument scientists to improve data analysis procedures
  • participate in exemplary studies from experiment through analysis to publication

Your Profile:

  • doctoral degree in physics or related fields
  • track record in software development, equivalent to at least one year full-time dedication
  • sound knowledge of C++ under Unix/Linux
  • experience with any of the following would be a plus: Python, Qt, CMake, git; test-driven development, cross-platform development; numerical mathematics, condensed-matter physics, scattering, spectroscopy, crystallography
  • communicative personality with excellent command of spoken and written English; German is a plus
  • in your application, please address all the above points; provide a publication list and references
