Assistant Professor of Avian Biology

The Department of Animal Science is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Avian Biology position that has 75% research and 25% teaching responsibilities. Although we are primarily seeking applicants with expertise in avian reproductive biology, nutritional biochemistry, or genomics, which are signature discipline areas of the Department, individuals with expertise in avian immunobiology, microbiomics, muscle biology, or ethology/well-being are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will have an outstanding record of scholarship with the expectation of procuring extramural funding from the USDA, NIH, and/or NSF. He/she will be expected to work collaboratively with other faculty in the Department of Animal Science to advance their research program. Numerous opportunities for collaborations exist in the Center for Reproductive Biology and Health, and in other interdisciplinary research programs in Penn State`s Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu/). Excellent core facilities exist on campus for cell biology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and transgenic animal research, and the Department maintains modern AAALAC-approved poultry facilities for research and teaching purposes. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching in the areas related to their expertise and will advise undergraduate and graduate students. The course to be taught could include ANSC 300 (Integrated Animal Biology) and a second course (either undergraduate or graduate) that will be based on departmental needs and the expertise of the candidate hired. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the University community is required. Qualified applicants should possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in any of the areas of expertise mentioned above and have at least one year of post-doctoral experience. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Candidates must possess excellent research, teaching, and grant writing skills, and demonstrate positive interpersonal relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with colleagues at Penn State and externally. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is essential in our department and university. Salary is competitive, commensurate with background and experience. An attractive benefits package is available. Applicants should upload a letter of application, a resume, academic transcripts, a brief statement of research and teaching interests, and the name, address, telephone number and email address of at least three references. Inquiries about the position may be directed to Dr. Robert Elkin (rge3@psu.edu; tel: (814) 863-2102), chairperson of the search committee. Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2019 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified.
