HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow II to support the Infectious Disease program within the Department of Medicine located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Science (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the Department of Medicine. 

USU is localized directly across the street from the NIH and is thus part of an extraordinarily vibrant local biomedical research community. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to USU. Responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. 

Central to our laboratory mission is an in-depth exploration of the basic mechanisms of in innate and adaptive responses to infectious disease with the goal of development of protein-based therapeutics and novel vaccine concepts. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong experience in development, grow and structure of microscopic organisms including bacteria and viruses and development of vaccine immunotherapies for the treatment of virial/bacterial infections and allergies. This position requires experience in both microbiology of viruses and bacteria and animal handling that include adult and neonatal mouse work (immunizations and of airway hyperreactivity measurements), laser capture microdissections and siRNA gene knockdown. In addition, candidate must have strong hands on development of virial vectors and immunology/molecular biology techniques including multi-color flow cytometry, in vitro immune assays, DNA manipulation, RNA-sequencing etc. Preferences will be given to individuals with experience in following GLP for processing, analyzing clinical trial samples and generation and quality control of technical reports. 

We are looking for applicants with a doctorate in the field of Medical Microbiology or Immunology. Applicants need to be able to work independently and in a collaborative environment. Excellent communication and witting skills, self-motivation, management skills and record of publication is required. Experience in writing grant proposals is a plus.

Responsibilities:

1.  Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development.

2.  Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.

3.  Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such multi-color flow cytometry, siRNA gene knockdown, laser capture microdissections, in vitro immune assays,  DNA cloning and sequencing, ELISA, western blotting, adult and neonatal mouse handling, animal injections, bleedings and immunizations.

4.  Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments.

5.  Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals.

6.  Assists with training laboratory staff as needed.

7.  Maintains cleanliness of laboratory areas.

8.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data in Immunology Methods, Molecular Biology techniques including multi-color flow Cytometry, ELISA, DNA and Protein Electrophoresis, Western Blotting, PCR, transfection etc. Mechanisms of humoral response to HIV-1 with the goal development of protein-based therapeutics and novel vaccine concepts

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  PhD in a related scientific discipline

Minimum Experience:  2 - 4 years

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  May provide guidance to laboratory staff

Work Environment:  Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends
