Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology

Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the position of Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Carver College of Medicine is rated in the top 20 public medical schools for National Institutes of Health funding and is part of a major research university. The College and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are equal partners in UI Health Care with the hospital being one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology has a distinguished research and teaching faculty and a nationally recognized research program.
The chair of the department is the spokesperson for the faculty and represents the department in interactions with the college, as well as the national scientific community. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and appointments; oversight of all departmental educational and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and short term and long term strategic planning for the department. In addition, the chair is an important institutional leader, serving on the Enterprise Committee, which provides operational and strategic input to the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean.

Candidates must have previous records consistent with appointment as a tenured professor of Microbiology and Immunology. This includes a PhD or MD degree or equivalent and an outstanding record of accomplishments in research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate should have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment where excellence in scholarship can flourish, as well as experience and interest in developing and leading research and educational programs that foster a diverse workforce. The candidate should have a record of innovative research and the ability to provide effective administrative and fiscal leadership with a record of excellent interpersonal skills, and positive interactions with students, staff and faculty. Candidates with expertise in host-pathogen interactions, microbial pathogenesis, immunology, microbial genetics, or molecular virology are all encouraged to apply. An interest in interdisciplinary research programs is advantageous. The successful candidate should have the ability to build and strengthen relationships within UI Microbiology and Immunology, UI Health Care, and the State of Iowa. A strong work ethic with conscientious follow-through on tasks and commitments is desired with experience in fair, inclusive, balanced, and transparent decision-making skills.
